Arklow 4a

Arklow Pipe Band was formed on 03rd April 1941 at a meeting which was held at Magowans Hall on the South Quay in the town, the official name adopted for the band that evening was St. Columcille's Pipe Band although the band is more commonly known as Arklow Pipe Band nowadays, especially on the competition scene.  After the foundation of the band, tuition was received from a Scotsman living in Gorey at the time by the name of Coughlan Cavanagh, members of St. Michael's Pipe Band in Gorey also gave tuition to the new members as did members of Fintan Lalor Pipe Band, Dublin.  The first official public performance of the band took place on Christmas Eve 1942 when the band paraded through the streets of Arklow.  The band first started to compete in competitions during the 1960's and since then have had many successes, including Ulster, Leinster and All-Ireland titles as well as winning the World Championship title on a couple of occasions.  The band currently competes at Grade 4A on the competition circuit and is always open to new members.  The current tartan worn by the band is the 'Ancient Red McPherson' Tartan.  The band use a picture of the '19 Arches' on the head of their Bass Drum, this is the bridge in the town of Arklow which spans the Avoca River and is known as being the longest hand made stone bridge in Ireland, also on the Bass Drum is the town crest of Arklow with the logo 'Maoin na Mara Ár Muinighin' which translates as 'Our trust is in the wealth of the sea'.
